Drug Addiction in Illinois

The following Illinois substance abuse statistics come from IDPH (Illinois Department of Public Health). 

In 2019, almost 50,000 Illinois residents engaged with treatment for a substance use disorder. The most commonly abused substances in Illinois in 2019 were: 

  • Alcohol
  • Marijuana
  • Cocaine
  • Heroin
  • Amphetamine 

From 2019 to 2020, the number of fatal opioid overdoses in Illinois increased by 33% to 2,944 deaths associated with opioids. This increase in drug-induced mortality in Illinois is largely due to the rise of fentanyl and other powerful synthetic opioids. Deaths in Illinois where synthetic opioids are implicated have increased by 2,736% since 2013 and the beginning of the third wave of the opioid epidemic. In 2019, Illinois was ranked 24th in the United States for fatal drug overdoses.
