As in all U.S. states, drug abuse is associated with a range of adverse outcomes. State data show that: 

  • From 2000 to 2020, over 28,000 North Carolinians died of drug overdoses.
  • In 2019, each fatal drug overdose in North Carolina was associated with five visits to the emergency department.
  • Nearly 89% of accidental opioid overdose deaths in 2019 were linked to illicit opioids like fentanyl.
  • Meth overdoses claimed 160 lives in 2017, while heroin overdoses resulted in 619 deaths in 2018.
  • The state witnessed a nearly 140% surge in opioid overdose ED visits from 2010 to 2019.
