Kentucky has some of the highest U.S. drug overdose death rates. The state recorded 1,160 fatal overdoses in 2017, a number that slightly decreased to 989 in 2018, yet still positioned Kentucky among the states with elevated overdose rates.
The year 2020 saw a resurgence in lethal overdoses in Kentucky, attributed in part to lockdown measures and social distancing restrictions imposed during the pandemic. These nationwide factors contributed to a surge in drug abuse and overdoses.
Historically, marijuana has been the most abused illicit drug in Kentucky. However, since the late 1990s, when the opioid epidemic took hold, the state has faced significant challenges wit this class of medication. Fortunately, strides have been made in recent years. According to NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse), the period from 2017 to 2018 saw the following notable improvements in Kentucky:
- Deaths linked to prescription opioids decreased from 433 to 315.
- Fatal heroin overdoses experienced a 50% reduction.
- There was no increase in fatal overdoses associated with synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.
- Despite these positive trends, prescription opioids and synthetic opioids continue to be the leading contributors to deadly overdoses in the state of Kentucky.
