Since the pandemic of 2020, rates of drug addiction, alcoholism, and prescription pill abuse have more than doubled in the United States, according to annual reports from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Among Maryland residents, more than one in ten adults reported past-month use of illicit drugs.

Historically, only 10% of people who needed addiction treatment engaged with rehab. Today, 25% of those who require rehab engage with an inpatient or outpatient program. Although this progress is encouraging, 1 million U.S. over-12s need treatment for substance use disorder but have no idea how they can connect with help.

Substance abuse hotlines are an excellent way of closing this treatment gap. An addiction hotline can provide people in need with resources and referrals, enabling them to kickstart their recovery in Maryland.
