Nebraska Drug Abuse Statistics
of residents reported past-month drug use
Drug addiction and alcoholism are public health concerns in Nebraska, as in all U.S. states. The most current data from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) indicate that almost 49 million over-12s in the United States had diagnosable drug or alcohol addictions in 2022. Among these, just 10 million engaged with evidence-based treatment. Over 1 million people did not get treatment because they did not know how to engage with appropriate services.
With almost 10% of Nebraska residents reporting past-month drug use, substance abuse hotlines can serve as a valuable first step for those grappling with drink or drugs. Addiction hotlines in Nebraska are not intended to replace formal treatment, but rather to connect those who require treatment with inpatient and outpatient rehab centers throughout the state

Drug Addiction in Nebraska
Misuse of addictive substances, from alcohol and tobacco to prescription medications and illicit drugs, is a pressing public health concern in Nebraska. Alcohol is the most abused substance. State data show that 60% of young adults and adults reported regular use of alcohol in 2019. Over one in five high school students also report current alcohol use. Among high school students and young adults, binge drinking is the most damaging pattern of alcohol consumption.
Although cigarette smoking has declined in the state, there has been a sharp uptick in the use of vaping products. NSDUH 2022 (National Survey on Drug Use and Health) reflects this change in habits with the inclusion of questions concerning vapes and alternative tobacco products.
