People in South Datoka struggle with substance use disorder.

In 2021, 7% of South Dakota residents disclosed engaging in illicit drug use in the past month, as reported by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Nationally, the issue of addiction is on the rise. More troubling than the doubling of addiction rates from 2019 to 2021 is the fact that over 75% of individuals requiring treatment for substance use disorder – the clinical term for addiction – do not receive the help that they need. More than 1 million U.S. adults cited a lack of knowledge on accessing help as the reason for not obtaining the required addiction treatment.

To address this significant treatment gap, substance abuse hotlines in South Dakota play a crucial role. These hotlines offer impartial advice and assistance in connecting individuals with treatment providers across the state.
