Oklahoma residents have a diagnosable substance use disorder

With one in eight residents of Oklahoma reporting the use of addictive substances in the previous month, substance use disorder and alcohol use disorder are pressing public health concerns in the state.

Rates of addiction have been sharply rising in the United States since 2019, according to the annual results of NSDUH (National Survey on Drug Use and Health). 2022 data show that 49 million over-12s in the U.S. meet the DSM criteria for drug addiction or alcoholism.

Even more concerning than the prevalence of diagnosable addictions is the substantial gap between those who need treatment and those who manage to engage with professional help. Over 1 million adults stated they were unable to get treatment because they did not know how to go about connecting with appropriate care. Substance abuse hotlines can serve as conduits, streamlining the initiation of the recovery process for those unsure how to get the help they need.
