Substance abuse is a serious concern in Kansas, like in every U.S. state. The abuse of all types of addictive substances has sharply increased since 2019, according to data published each year by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Among residents of Kansas, 2021 data show that over 10% of residents of the state reported using illicit drugs at some stage in the previous month.

Although more people than ever before are engaging with addiction treatment, there is still a significant gap between those who require evidence-based addiction treatment and those who get the help they need. A substance abuse hotline is one approach to closing this gap.
