Substance abuse is a significant public health concern impacting individuals and communities throughout Texas. According to NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse), around 9% of Texas residents were diagnosed with substance use disorder in 2021, yet less than one in ten managed to engage with treatment.
A substance abuse hotline Virginia can be beneficial for anyone who is experiencing problems with the abuse of prescription medications, illicit drugs, or alcohol. NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) reports that almost 10% of Virginians used some form of addictive substance in the previous month. Among those, just 10% engaged with any type of treatment.
Addiction hotlines are one way of plugging this concerning treatment gap, in Virginia and elsewhere in the United States, where rates of addiction have nearly doubled from 2019 to 2021. Virginia substance abuse hotlines are not meant to replace addiction treatment, but rather to connect those who need help with resources, treatment providers, and support groups throughout the state.

Drug Addiction in Virginia
According to data from the Virginia Department of Health, the state faced a concerning situation in 2021 with an average of seven daily deaths from drug overdoses. In 2020, the number of emergency room visits due to opioid use reached 9,901, indicating a 33% increase from the previous year. This rise in overdose deaths is predominantly fueled by the use of fentanyl, a dangerous synthetic opioid.
Increased opioid use also elevates the risk of contracting hepatitis C and HIV through the sharing of needles for injection. Hepatitis C leads to liver inflammation, while HIV weakens the body’s immune system.
Beyond this, Virginia residents gained the legal ability to purchase, consume, and cultivate marijuana with certain limitations from July 2021. Despite this, a 2020 survey highlighted that only 17% of Virginians reported using marijuana in the past year, positioning Virginia among the states with lower reported usage rates.
Data from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) show that from 2014 to 2017, an average of 5.6% of Virginia adults grappled with alcohol addiction, reflecting a national trend. Regrettably, a mere one-tenth of individuals with substance use disorders received necessary treatment. SAMHSA’s data also revealed that in 2017, over half of those in treatment were addressing drug-related issues, while others sought help for alcohol-related problems or both drug and alcohol issues.
