Addiction in Mississippi, as in all U.S. states, is becoming a growing problem. Rates of addiction to alcohol, illicit drugs, and prescription medications are at an all-time high. Regrettably, among the 46 million adults with addictions in the United States, just 10 million engaged with professional treatment, with 1 million of these people unsure how to go about finding appropriate and evidence-based treatment.

Substance abuse hotlines serve as one method of narrowing this disturbing treatment gap and helping people find the right addiction treatment programs for their needs. An addiction hotline is not intended as a replacement for treatment, but rather acts as a conduit between those who need help addressing addictive behaviors and treatment providers throughout the state. Read on to learn more about the role of addiction hotlines in Mississippi.

Alcoholism and Drug Addiction in Mississippi

Although addiction in Mississippi remains a pressing concern, there’s some good news. In 2022, Mississippi experienced a 10% reduction in its drug overdose death rate, marking a positive shift after a troubling period of over five years when the rate more than doubled. This improvement resulted from a collaborative effort among various state agencies committed to addressing the crisis.

According to data from CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the state’s overdose death rate surged from 352 deaths at a rate of 12.1 per 100,000 people in 2016 to 787 deaths at a rate of 28.4 per 100,000 people by 2021. While there were still approximately 700 overdose deaths in 2022, the numbers remained roughly twice as high as they were in 2016.

Stand Up, Mississippi is a program at the forefront of efforts to combat the opioid crisis within the state. Its leaders focus on educating the public about the impact of opioids and improving access to treatment services. Funding for Stand Up, Mississippi comes from a federal grant issued by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration). In 2019, for example, over 4,800 people received substance abuse treatment in residential treatment centers located across the state. These centers, collectively offering about 640 beds, are certified by the state’s Department of Mental Health. Various funding sources, including federal dollars, block grants, Mississippi Legislature funds, and a portion of the alcohol tax, contribute to the availability of treatment options.

While this is only one method of attacking the widespread issue of addiction in Mississippi, it is an encouraging start. Call Addiction Hotline today at 855-701-0479 today and begin your recovery in Mississippi tomorrow.
